You stared at Roman Empire for a long while. "You- wait. How can you be dead? Does that mean I'm dead too?!" You panicked.
Roman Empire laughed boisterously while you stared at him, waiting for an answer. He stopped, still chuckling, and looked at you.
"No dear- you're in a Coma, just like the doctor said. But because a coma is kind of like being half-dead, your half spirit I guess is what you could call it. But I'm dead. And I have been for a very long time. Since around the year 500 I believe." He said. You looked at him up and down for a moment.
"That explains the outfit." You grumbled. "How did you die though?" He looked at you.
"That- is a story for another time mia bella. But for now, let us walk a bit and clear your head. We may not have much time to speak." He said, pulling you out into the hallway and leading you nowhere in particular.
"Why is that? The doctor said it might take a week-!" but Roman empire cut you off.
"Mia Bella, you are now a nation province. Those of our
abilities, heal faster and live longer than any human could." He explained. You nodded slowly.
"So wait- how much longer can someone live than a human- if they're like us I mean
" You asked slowly, trying to wrap your mind around what was being said. It just didn't seem possible.
Well you know Japan right?" He asked. You stared blankly at him for a moment and he sighed. "I mean- Kiku Honda." You nodded.
"Yeah! We've been friends for almost two years now!" You said. Roman Empire smiled at you. "I didn't know he was Japan!"
"How old do you think he is?" He asked. You thought for a moment.
"Maybe eighteen?" You said. "twenty tops if you want to look at it from your perspective." Roman empire laughed again.
"Mia Bella- Japan is One thousand Six hundred years old."
Your jaw dropped, and you could swear that if it had dropped a millimeter lower, it would have hit the floor. You pointed back at the room where Kiku was and gave him a questioning look.
He just laughed again and nodded. "Yes. That's the Kiku I was talking about. Everyone in there is a lot older than what they look like Mia Bella. But you'll get used to it soon." He said, patting you on the head like the grandchild he claimed you were.
"H- how old is Alfred? What country is he?" You asked. "I think they said America, but that can't be right
can it?" You looked at your Nonno with a mixture of terror and wonder.
"Hmm- lets see
510 years I think since Columbus came across him. But if you're only counting how long he's been independent of his brother- I think it's about 236 or something." He said
You swooned on the spot. You never would have guessed it. It was too unreal and impossible. But it was true and you couldn't change it. He- your best friend... was more than he seemed. He was a nation, 510 years old! Wh- how could this be? What did it mean? He was good at history; this couldn't be why- could it? This was some kind of joke! Someone had to be pulling your leg.
"You have a lot to think about." Roman Empire said. "But if you remember anything from me- it's this. Never forget who you are and what you represent as a nation. You must keep in mind that you are not only you anymore. You are hundreds, thousands, maybe millions of people now. It's never going to be easy, but it is now your duty to keep going with a level head and strong resolve. Do you understand?" He looked at you, more seriously than he had the entire time you had talked to him. You looked at him.
"I understand, but how will I know how to run a country??? I- you can't expect me to be perfect! I- what makes me even worthy to hold such a responsibility?! What even makes me look strong enough to?!"
Roman Empire looked at you and smiled. "
"No one is perfect Mia Bella. Not even any of the Nations in this hospital. Not even your friend Alfred- America." He said. "Why do you think there is war? Why do you think I died? Because we make mistakes. But as countries, we learn from them and we cannot ignore the past." He told you with utmost seriousness that made you gulp down a frightened shiver. "If you doubt, look into history. Maybe ask one of the other nations. One of the older ones." He said. Then he smiled. "It's not easy- like I said before. But it's a duty that must be cared for. Alright?"
You looked at him for a moment, then nodded. He pulled you into a hug and kissed your forehead lightly. You blushed a little. Despite him being your Grandfather, you still felt like you didn't know him that well. You looked at him again.
"How can I talk to you again?" You asked. He frowned.
"Hopefully you never see me again. I don't want you dead, or in a coma ever again. But if you look into history, I'm there." He said with a smiling finish. "Now- it's time for you to wake up." He said. You frowned as you started feeling dizzy. "Do your best mia bella. I know you can."
And with that- the world went black.
